License & attribution
Folio is licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0. The repository root contains the full LICENSE text and a NOTICE file, and every published @nextgensoftwares/folio-* package ships both.
Apache-2.0 is a permissive license: you can use Folio in commercial and closed-source products, modify it and redistribute it, as long as you meet a few simple conditions.
What you must do
When you redistribute Folio (in source or compiled form, as part of your product, or as a modified version):
- Include a copy of the license. Ship the
LICENSEfile (or the Apache-2.0 text) with your distribution. - Keep the
NOTICE. Section 4(d) of the license requires that redistributions and derivative works retain the contents of Folio'sNOTICEfile, for example in a "third-party notices" file, an about box, or the documentation that ships with your product. You may add your own notices next to it. - Keep existing notices. Don't remove copyright, patent, trademark or attribution notices from the source files you redistribute.
- State significant changes. If you modify Folio's files, mark the modified files with a prominent notice that you changed them.
Using Folio in a web app you operate (without distributing Folio itself) does not trigger these redistribution conditions, but bundling it into JavaScript you serve to browsers is a distribution, so include LICENSE and NOTICE in your third-party notices. Most bundlers' license plugins can do this for you.
What you get
- A copyright license to use, reproduce, modify, distribute and sublicense.
- An explicit patent grant from every contributor for their contributions. The grant terminates for anyone who sues claiming that Folio infringes a patent, which protects the whole community.
- No trademark rights. The license doesn't grant permission to use the Folio name or logo to endorse your product beyond describing where your software comes from.
- No warranty. Folio is provided "as is"; see sections 7 and 8 of the license.
A friendly request (optional)
If Folio helps you, we'd be grateful for a visible credit, such as a "Built with Folio" link in your app's about page, footer or documentation. It helps other people find the project and keeps it sustainable.
This is a request, not a requirement. The only attribution the license requires is keeping the LICENSE and NOTICE contents described above.
Contributing
Contributions are accepted under the same license ("inbound = outbound"): by submitting a pull request you agree that your contribution is licensed under Apache-2.0, as section 5 of the license states. We recommend signing off your commits with the Developer Certificate of Origin (git commit -s). See Contributing.
Third-party code and fonts
Folio depends on permissively licensed (MIT) libraries: ProseMirror's packages, harfbuzzjs, bidi-js, linebreak, pdf-lib, docx. It never copies code from AGPL/GPL projects. The test fonts in packages/fonts/fixtures/ (Geist, Geist Mono, Noto Sans Arabic) are under the SIL Open Font License, with their license files kept beside them. If you ship those fonts, follow the OFL.
Not legal advice
This page summarizes the license to help you comply. The LICENSE file is the authoritative text.
